Catching a Swedish lesson on musical death metal, we have In Flames, a melodic death metal band from Gothenburg, Sweden that was formed in 1990. The band are considered to be one of the pioneering bands of the Gothenburg metal sound along with other bands such as At the Gates and Meshuggah. They are known for their catchy songs such as “Take This Life”, “Only for the Weak”, “Come Clarity”, “The Quiet Place”, and “State of Slow Decay”, which they will play with great passion and energy, turning their live shows into a wild carnival. Currently working on their 15th studio album as of February 2026, the Swedish metal band has released their 14th studio album “Foregone” in 2023. The band have also won 7 Swedish Grammis Awards for Best Hard Rock/Metal Album and have sold over 2 million records worldwide. Interestingly, the band’s vocalist Anders Fridén was previously part of the melodic death metal band Dark Tranquillity before joining In Flames. No wonder In Flames is one of the few bands in the world of musical death metal with 14 studio albums to their credit.
This Swedish metalcore band was formed in 2021 and have been busy with their heavy music that heavily falls into the realms of metalcore and nu metal. We can’t really decide on which songs are any good, because they’ve all released their tracks from their album Excessive Guilt (2024) – “on the verge”, “guilt”, “new low” and “backfire”! The band’s debut EP – Extended Pain – has held down a spot in the Spotify Top 200 Global Metal Chart for nearly a year and has been viewed over 50 million times. In their debut album, they managed to cram 11 songs with a combined length of precisely 20 minutes and 11 seconds – all in short, and punchy, as one would like in a metal song! Thrown are now signed to Arising Empire, and they are rapidly making a name for themselves within the metalcore genre.
Deathcore band Distant of Rotterdam bring the pain with downtempo deathcore that really gets your chest rattling, specifically in headbanging tracks such as “Nothing Left to Hate”, “Desolation” and some heritage tracks like “Argent Debt”. They brought their brand new album “Nothing Left to Hate” in 2026, which is a follow up to their equally impressive deathcore album “Heritage” released in 2023, part of an ongoing narrative known as “Tsukuyomi” or “Harvest Moon”. They are currently signed to Century Media Records and have released several full length albums and EPs.
A California based quintet, Upon Stone is carrying on the classic melodeath style to its prime. You may stream their songs “Dead Mother Moon”, “Fury My Master” and the rest of their tracks in their recent EP “End Time Lightning” (2025). Century Media would later sign the band out and music critics have praised the band for reviving the style of musical death metal. Their debut album Dead Mother Moon is credited by critics to bring musical death metal into a new era.
